the Riwaka River pours out of the cave-riddled marble of Takaka Hill in this beautiful area of Kahurangi National Park. Damp forest, clear cold water, tranquil pools, and moss-covered and water-worn marble rock create a fairyland quality. A short path leads through the forest to where the river emerges. One of the founding members of the Nelson Underwater Club, Ross McDonald along with his mate Eric King, Malcolm Hume and Roger Cross were first to enter the cave system to quell local rumours of a murderer hiding bodies inside the cave, equipped with little more than a candle in an Agee jam jar for light they proved the rumours false and discovered a labyrinth of tunnels. Today the club dives with cave lines and modern torches to illuminate the way through the tunnels, we generally only goes as far as the third sump in the series of more than ten. Most of this trip is actually walking and the underwater portion is only about 20minutes. The trip is physically demanding and requires a high level of skill and strength especially when it comes to donning and doffing equipment in difficult condition, there are huge boulders and rapids to negotiate in the dark so being coordinated is important. In saying this it is a spectacular full day trip that shouldn't be missed. The cave system is fairly open with large caverns but there is a small portion which you will need to squeeze through if you choose to, it is not essential. The cave has many slice flows, stacamites and stalactites with are very interesting even if you have seen them before. Apart from the occasional small eel in the water there is absolutely no life within the caves. https://www.nelsonunderwaterclub.co.nz/horoirangi-marine-reserve daily 0.75 2021-08-26 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/606170b099931c5e38527a3a/1630020626716-C4T3GYY8BPH16M4OJVOV/horoirangi-map-565.jpg Horoirangi Marine Reserve - Horoirangi Marine Reserve Situated 12km north of Nelson city, Horoirangi Marine Reserve extends northeast from Glenduan (The Glen) to Atatata Point on the southern headland of Cable bay, and offshore for one nautical mile. The marine reserve is a little over 5km long and cover 904 hectares. The reserve itself was created in 2006 with the assistance of the Nelson Underwater Club, in an area that was deemed unsuitable for any marine life. In 2006 there wasn't a fish to be seen, the rocks were bare apart from the occasional small crayfish cowering under a rock. Since then the change has been dramatic, large numbers of crayfish have repopulated the coastline, while weed and sponges have covered the rocks, returning the habitat for the large variety of fish that now call the reserve home, our members have identified at least 33 different species of fish in the reserve. Visibility is generally poor, at around five metres or less, however there are times that it can exceed 15 metres. The diving is generally shallow as the rocky reef system transitions to sand around 15 metres out from shore. The further from shore, the more the long shore current that forms the Boulder Bank will affect divers. Water temperatures drop to around 10 degrees in the winter and we have seen them as high as 22 degrees in the summer. Diving in the mornings is best here as the sea breeze tends to get up in the afternoon, making a rough trip home. The playful seal population that bathe ostentatiously on the rocks offer the first glimpse into the abundance of marine life that you’ll discover around Tonga Island, and beneath the surface is a thriving environment of red rock crabs, crayfish, snapper, hermits and kina. With something for all ages and abilities whether it be snorkeling or free diving between Tonga Quarry and Foul Point or scuba or freediving around the rewarding Tonga Island reefs,there is always something to be seen and photographed in the reserve. Tonga Island is one of the best underwater photography locations close to nelson with its abundance of sea life, flora and fauna its no surprise its on many a divers list when they visit the region. West Tasman Bay) - Kaiteriteri (Inc. West Tasmand Bay) An extremely popular place during the summer months. Little Kaiteriteri is a very safe place to shore dive and ideal for beginner divers or is an excellent place for familiarization and testing of new gear. A short shore swim (or walk at low tide) will get you out on the right hand side rocks where the better shore diving can be had. Heading out from the main Kaiteriteri boat ramp areas such as Bark Bay, Adele Island, Tonga Island Marine Reserve, Separation Point, Torrent Bay etc. Crays can be found at many of these spots and many more unmentioned spots. Great close and local diving Kaiteriteri is the main access to Abel Tasman National Park. Many great spots for photography and scenic dives. From here good diving is at all the points up to and including Okuri Point. Anywhere along the west side of D'Urville offers excellent diving with Port Hardy and Stephens Passage (very experienced divers only), offering the best diving in the Nelson area. Visibility can be up to 20 m and the life for photography is excellent. Crayfish can be found in most places with an excellent supply of fish. The best time of year for crayfish is December through to April. These can al be alternative launching sites for the prevailing north west winds, preventing launching from Okiwi Bay. The shallow bays usually have butterfish, the points blue cod, kingfish and rocky outcrops harbor the odd crayfish. The best diving is to be had at the outer Pelorus Sound around the Chetwood islands, Forsyth Island etc. with good size crays on offer in great diving country. This area is one of the clubs dive spots when weather out of Okiwi Bay is not as favorable. Elaine Bay and Waitata Bay Are accessible by traveling through Okiwi Bay and continuing on to these bays, where as Penzance and Duncan Bays are accessible from the Opouri Road turnoff after the Rai valley turnoff. https://www.nelsonunderwaterclub.co.nz/cable-bay daily 0.75 2021-08-27 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/606170b099931c5e38527a3a/1630020130988-HVJJYSFUALRXCU9OR07I/f961435a8837a13379e20dc117e56e1d7e00b7be.jpg Cable Bay - Cable Bay/Pepin Island On the road to Blenheim 15 km from Nelson is the Cable Bay turn-off, 8km from here to Cable Bay , and a private road , about 6 km from turn off takes you to Delaware Bay. Divers can walk out the left hand side of Cable Bay or from shore. Try and Get out around the rocks (about 800 m from shore) for the best diving . A bit too far to lug tanks so a surface swim or dive out is the easiest option. Best to use a dive flag on a float as boats use this side to access the bay. The Right side is not as exciting, but a reef runs through the middle of the bay, at about 15 m. Also of note is the old communication cable running through the bay which gave the bay its name. The Pepin Island reef (top end of Pepin Island) can be accessed by smaller boats which can be launched from Cable bay. This will also enable better access to Delaware Bay and the other side of Pepin Island. There can be interesting diving around both sides of Pepin Island, with little bays and rocks spread out over a large area. Moki, blue cod, terakihi, small crayfish, the odd kingfish and kawhai (right time of year), snapper if lucky and some shellfish can all be found on the outer limits of cable bay and off the Pepin island reef. (A lot of smaller fish, so be careful of limits.) The reef and areas around Pepin Island offer some good Free diving and spearfishing close to Nelson. This is a very popular bay for a dive close to Nelson and offers some nice and easy shore diving for those wishing to just get wet, try new gear or gain new skills. Smaller fish such as triple fins, mullet, (if your lucky a seahorse or two), octopus, maybe even a sting ray and others. the further out the diver gets, more fish species become prevalent.
